JUST MY OPINION 03/10/05

Seven Soldiers #0 (DC)
Weird Adventures

Writer: Grant Morrison
Artist: J.H. Williams III

Grant Morrison’s epic creative undertaking begins with this book and continues through four mini-series and one final bookend. I decided not to wait for the trades of these books, which likely wouldn’t see print until the end of 2006 at the earliest. If this first issue is any indication of the quality for the rest of this huge story, I’m glad I jumped on board. From my understanding, this issue is basically setup for the rest of the series. However, this book is an exciting, self-contained story in its own right. Grant Morrison does a great job of presenting a complex universe of characters, most of whom I’m unfamiliar with, that seem completely new and appropriate for today while incorporating concepts and story ideas that come from thirty to forty years ago.

Morrison’s writing on this book is reason enough to give it a try, but J.H. Williams III’s (Promethea) art is what really makes this comic an essential purchase. The beauty and complexity of Williams’ work is almost indescribable, so I won’t even try. You really need to see for yourself.

I won’t even pretend that I understand everything that is going on in this comic. Please don’t take that the wrong way. I’ve been left confused by some of Morrison’s writing in the past. This is something different. I hope that some of the themes and ideas introduced here will be explained further in the coming chapters. As it stands this is simply a great comic that I could read again and again and find something new with each reading.

Skurvy Dogs: Rags To Riches TPB (AiT/Planet Lar)
Reprints Skurvy Dogs #1-5

Writers: Andrew Boyd & Ryan Yount
Artist: Ryan Yount

Skurvy Dogs is unlike any other comic you will ever read. While I don’t read many ‘humor’ books, I’d read a lot of praise for this comedic tale of pirates in the modern world, so I decided to give it a try. I can honestly say that this book had me laughing from cover to cover. The issues collected in this trade provide the bulk of the laughs, and the extras included in this volume make it even funnier. If you are in the mood for a good laugh you really should give this book a read. At the very least you will learn why Portuguese lepers are called the piñatas of the sea, and why pirates hate monkeys which are otherwise known as the pigeons of the sea.

Here is a link to more information about this hilarious book.
